Consumers Abused By Default Choices

null

At some point the business sector realized the best way to take advantage of consumers was to use default options that make them spend money. A default option works because it creates an automatic decision by the consumer doing nothing. And doing nothing is the path of least resistance for time-poor consumers struggling to balance the many difficult responsibilities associated with work, family, maintaining financial security, and coping with stresses on their health.

Consider, for example, the endless advertisements that offer a free sample or trial for a product, such as some nonprescription medication or vitamin supplement. It may be a free week’s or month’s worth of product. But the find print is that you will automatically be enrolled in a program that mails you a monthly supply and bills your credit card. There probably will be some opportunity for you to cancel or opt out of this program, but doing so will require some significant effort by mail or phone that most consumers will not wish to undertake. No, the easy way is to just let the default option control your cost, even if you were not especially impressed with the trial use of the product. The same thing often happens with free trials for a magazine or some email publication.

If consumers were given a truly free choice they would have the opportunity to cancel or opt out of programs before they are charged. Instead, the consumer is given a default option which means that the consumer will likely forget about the option and simply rubber-plate the agreement without any real consideration to whether the consumer wishes to keep it or not. It is the same as when you rubber-plate a contract you sign, you automatically except the terms of the agreement. The only difference is that with a free trial you do not have to do anything to accept the offer or to file any complaints.

Ad companies spend considerable resources and energy with sophisticated tracking systems to ensure that you will visit their sites. The targeted consumers are sent automatic emails notifying them of special promotions, discounts, and coupons. These promotions are often delivered in the newsletter area and are well- timed so that you can take advantage of them. While you can register with the advertiser to receive their offers in your mail, you can always opt out of their mailers at any time. You can also receive discounts on products by registering as a member of their website.

If you were a genuine consumer and took advantage of their offers, you could earn money. You could make money just by referring consumers to the free offers that they pose. You would receive 50% cash back for every consumer that you refer to the company. You would earn money off the cash back that you receive for referring consumers to their free offers. The offers that you refer to companies generally track with the affiliate links as well as with the products or services that you promote. There are some reputable companies that offer cash back to members who refer a certain number of consumers to their websites.

It is fairly easy to earn money from these offers. The process is basically as follows: (1) sign up for a free account; (2) setup an account with an assumed name; (3) get listed in the company’s database; (4) use the assumed name to refer consumers; (5) recognize and learn their assumed names; (6) hyperlink to the company’s website; (7) recognize the cash back percentage that you are eligible for; and (8) submit your application form. The listing of companies that pay you to refer consumers could be the trick to locating which ones are paying you.

There are some fraudulent companies that will take your supposed name and try toude the cash back from your bank account. These companies have two ways of doing this. They will use the same name that you have used for your trade, e.g., John Smith. When you start your trade, you will have a persona, or name. This is used to make the pop-up look legitimate. The second way that these con artists do this is by using the same name for everyone in their bunch. That way if you have lots of strangers, as well as friends, they will think that you have each others’ number ready in case they want to contact you.

The key is to Cool Herrera. So many people say that they could not be successful as an independent contractor. It is not easy to work part-time as a hairstylist. You need to spend money on equipment, computers, and well- training employees. A large amount of money is in many of the salon equipment. If you did not have that large amount of money to begin with, you would not be able to afford to build up an office of your own.
